Oswalds, situated in the centre of the tranquil and ancient Hamlet of Sowerby. Formerly a dairy farm, dating from the 16th century. The farm was frequented by Alf Wight, the famous vet, who created the fictional character James Herriot , he wrote several books, Including “It shouldn’t happen to a vet” and all creatures great and small. Alf Wight was the local vet, based in Thirsk, which is less than half a mile away as the Crow flies. He frequented Church Farm on a weekly basis, one of his many jobs was to castrate cattle, castrations were carried out to the rear of Oswalds, which is now the car park. Church farm was converted to a hotel and restaurant in 1982, and fully refurbished in 2007/8 to a very high standard by the present owner. The name Oswalds, has been taken from Oswalds Church, which is almost directly facing the Hotel.
